New Haven - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last week of June
Sorry for the delays in the reports. Things got a little busy with trips and the holiday.
On June 26 I had a father and son trip, Rich and Chris . Chris was 10 years old and really didn’t like to fish.
I hoped by the end of the trip I could change his mind. We met at the dock at 5 am. Great conditions with a little fog. We had about 40 live bunker and another 30 fresh dead in the cooler. We ran out to the Hot spot off of Branford. I setup rich first , then set up Chris since I would need to help him get the hang of 3 waying live bunker. There were Fish there but not in the numbers I was hoping for. Rich was the first to hook up and handed the rod off to his son. The little guy fought the fish like a champ and boated a nice 35 inch striper. Since Chris picked up on the drifting pretty quick, I dropped a line down to try to give the guys more action. Well Chris Hooked up all on his own. I quickly gave him a hand because the fish was larger than he last. After a short battle and lots of laughs we boated a 39 inch fish that hit 25 pounds on the scale.
After that fish we started to get into a lot of blue fish and Chris was getting tried of drifting a live bunker with a 16 oz weight. I ran to another spot just west of use and anchored up and started to chunk. We had plenty of action with blue fish and a couple more stripers. There was also a lot of short runs. It was a real good time. I just love to see a child hook up with quality fish. Chris got off the boat asking when we could go again. That just made my day!!!
On June 28 I had another Father and son trip. This one was with Jeff and his 5 year old son Carter. I knew from the phone conversation I could not be drifting bunker with them. So we decide to meet at the dock at 10 am.
I planned to try to chunk for some stripers and blues then switch over to black fish. We didn’t hit any stripers but we had plenty of blue fish action. Carter Hung right in there and was fighting fish with the help of myself and Jeff. After a couple of hours of blues we headed over to a wreck that’s been holding good numbers of black fish. I had lost an anchor there a couple of weeks before so I had put a bouy on it so I could just Tie up. After tieing up it took the normal 10 to 15 minutes for the bite to start. Jeff was fishing on his own and I was hooking the fish and Carter would bring them in.
The black fish bite started to die off at the turn of the tide so I headed into the walls hoping for a striper on the out going tide. As the tide started to move the Blue fish started to feed again. We boated a few more then called it a day.
June 30 I had a porgy trip with the Johnson Family. We left the dock at 6:30 and I made the long run to Falkners Island. That was the only spot I knew that was hold good numbers of porgies this early in the season. The Bite came in waves, but the fish were there. I had to move around a little, but we put them into the boat. We only had a hand full of throw backs and most fish were 14-17 inches.
