A Busy and Productive Week....And No Hurricane!

Capt. Sal Tardella
August 30, 2009
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

The week was a mixed bag weather wise, starting out with high temps and rainy days and ending on the cool side. We were happy that the hurricane/tropical storm/tropical depression completely missed our area---after the local forecast had called for heavy winds and rain at the end of the week.

On Tuesday morning with Mark & Lexie Maruszewski of Darien—and their three children, Alex, Margaret and Luke; it was a back-to-school treat for the youngsters. The family caught a great number of porgies running up to 16″, some 10-pound bluefish, and more than a dozen striped bass up to 26″.

And on Tuesday afternoon we fished with residents of Melbourne, Australia—Frank Raco, and his 9-year-old son, Carmine—who've been staying with relatives in Bedford Hills NY. It was quite an experience for the father and son—their first fishing trip in this part of the world. They caught their first bluefish ever–some weighing 10 pounds—and they also had fun loading up on porgies (another specie heretofore unknown to them.) They took home enough filets for a huge family barbecue, and they'll probably be bringing home a lot of fish stories when they return down under.

Wednesday's excursion was like a school field trip–with one adult, Jim Tierney of New Canaan and his three children (Jack, Alex and Mollie) as well as their friends, Kyle Crowley and Jamie Murphy. It was a windy morning, so our options were somewhat limited. We caught a half a dozen scup up to 14″ before moving inshore around Westport—where we scored a half a dozen schoolie bass and bluefish up to 10 pounds.

We wrapped up the week early Sunday morning with George Yuquez of Redding and his three sons, George Jr., Harrison, and Travis. The day started off with a bang–catching striped bass on our first drift–plus five more schoolies in the same area. We then moved outside to do some jigging, but we didn't find much evidence that there were fish under the boat, so we moved closer to shore and began tube & worming, when Travis hooked into a keeper bass at 32″. We then tried some porgy fishing, and we hit them big-time, keeping seven for the dinner table. The day ended with a catch of a few more schoolie bass.
