Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Friday (9/24) was a beautiful day on Long Island Sound. We sailed at 10am with Ben Moeling of Norwalk (currently stationed in Iraq,) along with John Kavounas of Greenwich and Sean Sharpless of Charlotte, NC. We headed for mid-Sound, where we found lots of bluefish on the surface, jigging up more than 20, weighing up to nine pounds. We then made our way closer to shore, where the boys caught about four dozen porgies up to 14.5″, keeping just ten for the table.
No fishing on Saturday, but on Sunday morning we had a large group of boys from Greenwich– a fishing party hosted by George James for his son's 13th birthday. We fished in the middle of the Sound, giving the boys a quick lesson, after which they jigged up blues 3-9 pounds. When the action slowed we moved inshore and had great action with porgies up to 15″.
Monday was very dreary–-with rain and winds-–but we went out with Roger Eustance of Wilton and visitors from Colorado, Lynn Eustance and her friend, Jim. The conditions were less than ideal, so we couldn't get out very far. Working on the inside we did very well with porgies–boating more than 30 and keeping nine for the table–as well as a nice bycatch of a blue and striped bass.
We had to cancel our Oct 1 trip because of heavy downpours and gale warnings throughout our area. As I write this the temps outside are in the mid 40's, which should change everything very quickly--for better or worse. Blackfish season just opened, so we'll make our first try for tautog today (Sunday Oct 3.)
