CRAZY WEATHER--SUPER HOT TO COOL AND BACK TO HOT AGAIN....

Capt. Sal Tardella
July 21, 2012
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Thursday's trip (July 12) was with My Bonnie regular, Gary Lattrell of Poughkeepsie NY. He brought along two guests, Joe Seo of Hyde Park and Tim Carroll of Pleasant Valley. Although the weather was perfect, we had a very slow start--with no action in the Norwalk Islands. So I bit the bullet and ran over to the Nissoquoque, where we found just a few blues, which was very disappointing. I then moved to the middle of the Sound, off of Penfield Reef, and the boys got into bluefish 3-8 lbs. while blind casting. They took home 15 for a barbecue dinner.

On Saturday we sailed with Dan McClure, visiting from the Midwest. He caught porgies, bluefish and some short fluke.

We ended the week on Sunday morning and got into port a couple of hours before violent thunderstorms struck Fairfield County. Aboard were Cos Cob residents, Tom and Gabrielle Rattner and their young son and daughter, who were very enthusiastic (especially happy to be working with chum.) We stayed close to shore because of the dire weather forecasts, but the family brought in a mixed bag of blues, porgies and short fluke.

On Wednesday we had aboard two young children--Darien residents, Max and Greta Hoffmeister--entertaining Grandpa Joe Bazin, who was visiting from Topeka, Kansas. We began fishing around the Norwalk Islands, pulling up smallish porgies, after which we moved into deeper water, where we found porgies up to 18", and 16 fluke--with one keeper coming at 19.5."

Thursday's weather was radically different from the previous several days. It was actually cold in the morning, and the winds produced three-footers in L.I. Sound. We left the dock at 8am with Richard Sigmund of Norwalk and his brother, Todd, from Fairfield, along with their friend, David Tom of Norwalk. We spent the morning around the islands and off Westport, bringing 11 fluke and many large porgies up to 15". Lots of fish were lost at the boat, as well.

We sailed at 8:30am Saturday (July 21) with Dan and Adrienne Harknett. It was a good trip, resulting in ten fluke, half a dozen striped bass on light tackle, and one large porgy.
