Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

We're back on the water, and the weather's been cooperative, even though the fish are a bit fickle--feeding mostly during the dropping tide.
Our maiden voyage on L.I. Sound was on the Friday before the Memorial weekend. It went smoothly, and the day was perfect for our passengers' comfort. Aboard My Bonnie were visitors from Ridgewood NJ, John and Angelique Tripi, their daughter, Kim, and John's mother, Nancy. Their catch included three keeper sea bass, tons of sea robins, and a nice fluke coming in at 18″.
On Memorial Day morning we sailed with Dr. Steve Eliot of Weston and his friend, Ben Cohen of NYC. We headed straight for the middle of the Sound, and when the tide began to move they brought in bluefish 7-8 pounds, all of which were released back into the water.
The next day we sailed with fishing buddies: two brothers-in law from Ithaca NY–-Adam Greco and John Kalney–along with Al Palpier of Mecosta Michigan. All were experienced fishermen, and they brought in a dozen sea bass, with six keepers among them, as well as seven fluke–four of which were keeper size.
Our trip on Friday was with residents of Carmel, NY, Jim Oster and his 12-year-old son, Nick, along with Mike Schrum of Dutchess County NY. They brought in five small stripers, five sea bass (with one keeper) and one short fluke. Of course, they were kept busy throughout the morning bringing in sea robins.
Every new season brings its own surprises, and there's never a guarantee that yesterday's action will be repeated today--for better or for worse. We have to be prepared with every kind of bait and all types of lures. And we must adjust our techniques to match which fish are out there and how they're feeding. The best-laid plans rarely remain intact when our first and second stops aren't productive, so there's always a Plan B and a Plan C. No charter is the same as the last one or the next one. But we're always looking forward to that next one and hoping for a good report to come out of it.
