Lots of Families...Lots of Fish

Capt. Sal Tardella
August 15, 2012
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Saturday, August 4, was very hot and humid, but we fished with Ronald Herzlinger of New York City, and with his two young sons, Sam and Gabriel. The family caught close to a dozen harbor blues on the surface, as well as a nice catch of porgies up to 15".

We had a couple of days off and then sailed on Wednesday with Louis Arovas of Greenwich and his grandson, Ezra--visiting from San Diego. They had a wonderful day catching bluefish up 10 pounds, several fluke, and some keeper porgies.

Although thunderstorms were forecast for Friday afternoon, we took our chances and sailed at 7am with Kevin Jordan and his 7-year-old son, Leo, residents of NYC and New Fairfield CT. The father and son had a great time with some sea bass, porgies, and bluefish 3-12.5 lbs--all caught on light tackle. Leo was quite enthusiastic about the trip, especially since the 34" bluefish was the largest he's ever caught. And we were all home before the rains came.

We had a double header on Sunday; our morning passengers were Redding residents, Jim Cahill and his 13-year-old son, Quinn. While blind-casting along the shore we got bluefish up to ten pounds. For Quinn, it was his largest catch ever. They boated around 20 blues, keeping three for the table. The Cahills also caught some porgies and sea bass, all of which were released.

When we got back to the dock around noon, we administered some first aid to an unhappy boater who had a treble hook imbedded in his palm; when he saw us he asked for our help as he was about to be driven to the hospital emergency room. We we were able to take care of his problem--removing the hook and treating it with antiseptic--advising him to seek medical attention and a possible tetanus shot. All in a day's work....

In the afternoon we had Demitri Nikolaou of Norwalk and Ashley Shuster of South Windsor. We had to deal with some bumpy water, but--after giving them a quickie course on using rod and reel and top-water lures--the couple were able to score with bluefish 2-5 pounds, as well as some keeper porgies.

Tuesday's weather was ideal, and we left the dock at 7:00am with Steve Rooney of Norwalk and his two young sons. The family had great fun catching some short fluke, bluefish up to 7 lbs, and 14 striped bass; all of the fish were released except for one blue.
