Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report
Our first charter of the season was with Scott Graflund of Wilton and his dad, visiting from Arizona. It was a cold and windy day, but we managed some bass and flounder. The water was only in the high 40's which is probably why the action was so slow.
We crossed to the other side at the end of the week. In Northport the water temp at the stacks was about 60 degrees. We worked the power plant, bucktailing and using worms, but saw no fish. We tried some jigging around the OB and Can 13 and the southwest corner of 11B and didn't mark any fish there either. The temp at those three spots was around 50--still too cold for good fishing. We did see some sand eels, though, near Sunken Meadow, which is a good sign.
The last report from Raritan Bay was that the stripers were coming in up to 18 pounds, with a good mix of blues 5-7 pounds.
Yesterday, with the weather warming up a bit, we fished around the Norwalk Islands and did fairly well with schoolie bass up to 4 pounds, using bucktails and Sassy Shad. Flounder have been seen in the Norwalk River, with most anglers limiting out with good-sized fish and few throwbacks.
