Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

At the beginning of the week we sailed with Joe Castagna, manager of Pasta Fair Restaurant of Norwalk, and his 10-year-old daughter, Christina,. They had a great time videotaping their catch of bluefish on the surface at Middle Passage off the Norwalk Islands.
Dr. Larry Flegerman—an ear/nose/throat specialist with an office in Stamford—and his friend, Jeffrey, both of Weston, enjoyed catching bluefish off of Goose Island—a mixed bag of sizes from 1-5 pounds. We then moved to Westport and picked up some schoolie bass on bucktails.
Angela Damico of Stamford brought out her 12-year-old son, David, and four of his friends to celebrate his birthday. The kids had a great time, picking up porgies and chasing blues on the surface. Angela took home enough fish to have a party cookout that evening.
Greg Moskoff of Greenwich brought along his brother, Paul, visiting from Philadelphia—and Paul’s six-year-old son. We started out chunking at 28C, where we found some large bluefish. When the tide dropped we moved into Middle Passage and found smaller blues on top. They also took home enough blues for a family barbecue.
Bluefish are on the surface almost everywhere in our area, and can be brought in easily with 1.0 or 1.5 oz Crippled Herring lures. Some bonito are mixed in with the blues, a nice surprise for anglers looking for more of a challenge. Sand eels, along with peanut bunker and silver sides, are attracting all sorts of predators to our Islands. Fishing should be very productive this fall with that kind of bait so prevalent.
