Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rick McGeady of Wilton brought along his two sons, Alex and Patrick, for their annual “before-back-to-school” excursion on “My Bonnie.” We got them into some large bluefish, chunking off of Green’s Ledge Light, and finished off the day chasing blues on the surface at Middle Passage.
Norwalk residents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Banks and two young children, sailed with us for the first time and were very successful chunking mid-Sound, bringing in several large blues 8-12 pounds. To find something more suitable his little daughter and son, we moved to Peck’s Ledge Light, where small blues were on the surface. The kids had a great time reeling in lots of two-pounders, and it dad admitted it was his first experience catching fish on plugs.
Pete Wininger of Westport and two friends—had a super day casting into acres of 3-5 pound bluefish on the surface off of Middle Passage and Goose Island. They boated more than 30 fish and released all but six for the table.
New Yorkers, Steve and Josephine Linden and their son, David, came across a school of bunker about two miles offshore. We snagged a few and live-lined them, bringing in blues 12-14 pounds. When David’s arms grew weary we moved to a school of smaller blues on top, and everyone enjoyed casting plugs into them.
Executives of Diageo International (importers of fine liquors and beers) chartered us and another boat for a party of eight. It was a great afternoon, with all aboard catching blues and striped bass—the largest of the blues 14 pounds and the stripers up to 31”.
Patrick Gillespie of Rye NY--and two friends—fished with us on Saturday. One of the boys, a novice, blindcasting in the rocks, hooked a 26-inch striper on his first cast. After a while we moved to 28C, where we found non-stop bluefish action, with fish up to 9 pounds, and a nice bunch of porgies as a bycatch.
Tom O’Brien of New Canaan brought along his three sons for their first trip with us. Everyone caught bluefish on the surface, after which we moved off of the Norwalk Islands where the porgies were jumping into the boat.
David Katz of NYC and Westport brought along four buddies on our final trip of the week. The men and ladies had a great afternoon casting into a blitz of medium-sized bluefish off of Green’s Ledge...lots of blues for the barbie that evening.
The bluefishing has been sensational for the past two weeks, with almost-daily guarantees of surface action. The bait is holding strong locally, and we’re hoping these conditions will continue through the fall migration of striped bass.
