Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Robert Gottesman of Westport and New York City returned for a fishing trip after being away for two years. Bob and his son, Ben, had a lot of fun off Cockenoe where many schools of bluefish were on the surface. They boated about 15 and kept three for the dinner table.
We had a two-boat charter on the weekend for seven friends of TV commentator, Phil Donahue. The excursion was part of the group’s annual Notre Dame reunion, held each summer at the Donahue’s residence in Southport. It was a rough day, but they got some bluefish, striped bass and porgies.
Eric Sites of Redding and his father-in-law, Michael—visiting from Chicago—enjoyed catching striped bass up to 25” and some bluefish around Copp’s.
The next day's passengers were Ed Kosinski of New York City and his son, Dylan—and their Wilson Point friend, 7-year-old Michael Kamsky (a “My Bonnie” regular). Everyone got fish on the surface off of Copp’s and at Cockenoe—all caught on Creek Chub poppers.
Wiltonite, Tom Bendin, and his 10-year-old son and two other youngsters sailed with us for the first time. They had a wonderful time catching porgies, after which they hooked into blues on the surface outside of Sheffield Island. The winds were howling, and so were the kids—who were really delighted with the rough water pounding against the boat.
Kathy McGlade and her brother-in-law, Jay, both good fishermen--sailed with us on the afternoon of Labor Day. They had non-stop action from start to end, with blues on top off of Green’s Ledge Light, after which we found them again at Copp’s—ending the day at Cockenoe, where we left the fish hitting as the sun was setting and everyone needed a rest.
There's still a tremendous amount of bait around the Norwalk Islands from Southport all the way down to Smith's Reef--peanut bunker as well as silversides. If they hang around in these quantities anywhere in our neighborhood, it's should be a fantastic fall run!
