Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Wednesday Dennis Geronimo of Norwalk and St. Augustine FL entertained his two teen-aged grandsons with a morning trip—their first aboard “My Bonnie”. The weather was horrendous—sheets of rain, high winds, and very rough seas. They were a stalwart group, and managed to scratch out a modest catch of porgies and striped bass.
Thursday morning’s trip was a father-and-son outing for Ridgefield residents, Jim McMahon and his sons, Michael and James. What a difference a day makes. Although we left the dock enclosed by a pea-soup fog, we carefully maneuvered ourselves to a favorite spot off of Green’s Ledge Light, where we caught keeper bass up to 14 pounds and some porgies. As the sun came out and the fog began to clear, we made our way toward Westport, where the McMahons continued to reel in striped bass—and a nice 20-inch fluke. There was only one bluefish for the day—a big one—but he got away by snapping off our terminal tackle which had been set up for striped bass and had no leader.
Friday morning’s charter had every aspect of an ideal trip. Doug Slater of Bedford NY and his friend, Steve Roberts of Port Washington LI, enjoyed perfect weather—mild temperatures, sunny skies, and calm waters. They brought in 27 striped bass up to 32”, 21 porgies, two large bluefish and one fluke. Two very happy campers….
Our afternoon trip had a bumpier ride, with the winds having picked up by noontime. We had Katherine McGlade of Southport and her friend, Jay Powell. They brought in 15 striped bass up to 25”, one blackfish, and one large blue. All the fish were caught on bucktail lures, and all were released.
Saturday morning’s group included Dev Clifford of Wilton and his three young children, Hilary, Eleanor, and Caleb. As soon as we left the dock, we found bluefish blitzing on the surface close to Manresa. The three children were ecstatic with their ability to hook into the fish with bucktails and poppers. In all, they boated about 30, keeping only 12. We then moved around the Norwalk Islands, where we caught 11 striped bass up to 24”, caught on bucktail and sandworms. They also got some nice keeper porgies while fishing for bass. All the fish in their cooler will be used for a July 4th weekend barbecue.
And on Sunday, we rested.
Monday morning’s trip was with Murray Verlin of NYC and Stamford—returning for his first trip of the season. The octogenarian angler reeled a nice mess of porgies, more than a dozen stripers and two sea bass.
In the afternoon we had Henry Calam of and Old Greenwich and his friend, Sallie; they had great fun with striped bass up to 25”, two nice sea bass, and a load of porgies. We managed to get into the dock just as the brief thunderstorm was underway.
