Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report
On Tuesday morning we hosted retired French cosmetics CEO, Pierre Rogers of Rowayton; he brought along his son and young grandson, Erik. They had a nice early morning catch of striped bass, bluefish and porgies.
Thursday’s trip was affected by non-stop high winds throughout the morning. We had to stay close to shore, but Joe Pitts of Wilton—who brought along his son and the young man’s friend from Vienna, did manage to pick up a nice catch of striped bass.
On Friday morning we were faced with yet another challenge from Mother Nature-- thunderstorms from the beginning through the end of the charter. However, veteran fishermen, Wayne Hurland of Greenwich and his pal, Bud Barton, were not deterred. Carefully watching the progress of the weather, we took shelter in Wilson Point during a heavy downpour that included a brief lightning show. We then moved to 11B where we found bluefish feeding on a school of bunker. Another storm came through, and this time we had to leave the fish and return to the dock. Within an hour of landing, the sun came out. The trip yielded a nice catch of blues up to 13 pounds, some striped bass, porgies and fluke. All of the fish—except for four blues—were released.
Saturday morning’s trip was cancelled due to another threat of thunderstorms. But on Sunday we sailed at 7:00am with Charles Gannett and James Stone of NYC; they had a wonderful morning plugging up 3-5 lb. bluefish on the surface at Cockenoe as well as a dozen stripers up to 25” caught around the Norwalk Islands.
On Tuesday—a beautiful day for being on the water—we had an unusual party—two School Sisters of Notre Dame, Sr. Ilona Mensik, who resides at the St. Joseph Church convent in South Norwalk, and Sr. Ann Moles, who currently lives in Bridgeport. They caught one nice striped bass and about ten respectable bluefish. Sister Ann, age 74, never fished before. The trip was won as a prize in last year’s St. Joseph’s Church Raffle. The happy nuns took home a bunch of filets to share with friends and fellow clergy.
