Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Wednesday of this week we fished with Rafael Baez of Paragon Athletics in New Jersey--and four of his co-workers. They had a good day working around the Norwalk Islands and Westport, tallying 17 striped bass and two bluefish.
We left the dock and headed into a deep fog on Saturday morning, and the pea-soup conditions stayed with us for most of the trip. But the Hayden family (George, Sharon, and 11-year-old Christopher from Bethel, CT) had a marvelous time despite the funky weather. They caught a keeper bass and many blues up to 6 pounds, all caught on bunker chunks. This was their first charter experience, and the Haydens all agreed it was their best fishing trip ever.
Sunday morning's weather was a bit better, with a light drizzle and some wind. Our passengers were Dave Johnson of Alabama, and his son-in-law--Gerard Barton of Middlebury, CT. We started out in deep water midSound, but the action was too slow, so we moved closer inshore--near Westport and the Norwalk Islands--where the boys brought in 11 striped bass including one keeper measuring 32". Both Johnson and Barton were very happy campers, with Johnson promising to fish with us in Florida next winter.
Tuesday's trip was with 83-year-old Bud Wehrle of Las Vegas. Bud fishes with us a couple of days every year when he visits his sister in Rowayton. We got him into bluefish finning on the surface in the middle of the Sound, and he brought in a bunch of them in the 3-6 pound class. Action was nonstop for almost two hours.
The Sound is loaded with sand eels--especially on the L.I. side--providing a lot of topwater action. Fluke and porgies are also being found in abundance.
