Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tuesday's trip was with 83-year-old Bud Woehrle of Las Vegas. Bud fishes with us a couple of days every year when he visits his sister in Rowayton. We got him into bluefish finning on the surface in the middle of the Sound, and he brought in a bunch of them in the 3-6 pound class. Action was nonstop for almost two hours.
On Thursday we fished with Murray Verlin and Colleen McCourtney of Stamford and NYC. The temps were low, the skies were cloudy, and there was some wind throughout the morning, but the couple didn't seem to mind because they brought in a lot of bluefish and a nice striped bass that just missed being a keeper--all caught on plugs.
Friday's trip was with Ed Yuchowitz of Stamford. We found striped bass and bluefish feeding on sand eels, and--using a plastic sand eel lure--Yuchowitz caught many schoolie bass and harbor blues.
We sailed Saturday with Westporters, Jason Murphy and his young son, Connor. After making our way across the Sound we found bluefish off of Northport. The fish ranged from 5-6 pounds, all caught on Creek Chub lures. We finished the trip with some schoolie bass caught off the Norwalk Islands.
Father's Day was no day off for us. We had a double header, starting at 6:00am with Jim Tierney of New Canaan, who brought along his two sons and their friends, also New Canaanites, Michael Murphy and his pre-teen son. They had a great morning, reeling in more than a dozen bass 25-29"--all caught on bunker chunks. When that action slowed down, we moved closer inshore, where we baled porgies that just kept coming. The afternoon trip was with Dr. Michael Innerfield of Suffern NY, who brought along his 16-year-old daughter, Diana, and her big brother, Steve, a high school senior. The family got into bluefish in the Nissoquogue River--all in the 3-6 pound class--and took home enough for a Father's Day barbecue dinner and threw back the rest. They, too, had fun with a nice porgy catch.
