Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Independence Day we had two trips.
The morning excursion was with Ted Inglesias of Westport, who brought along his father, a resident of New York City. This annual fishing trip is an ongoing birthday celebration for the elder Inglesias. They did very well, using bunker chunks in the middle of the Sound--bringing in more than dozen bass, ranging from 23-28" and blues weighing 5-7 pounds.
In the afternoon Michael Goodner of Armonk NY and his 7-year-old son, Eli, were aboard "My Bonnie". This was their first saltwater trip, and they both got into striped bass--about a dozen--plus a few bluefish.
Thursday morning we sailed with Robert Fiske of New Canaan, entertaining his son, Rusty, and Rusty's two sons, Peter and Robert, visiting from Boston MA. Everyone had a great time reeling in striped bass and some nice bluefish up to 7 lbs. A few blues were kept for a family barbecue dinner, and all of the other fish were returned to the water.
We sailed Friday morning with Mitchell Kreuch, Greg Ehlers, and Tim Sickinger of Darien, and Tim's brother,Ted--visiting from out of state. Our first stop was in deep water in the middle of the Sound, but the action there was disappointingly slow--with a few blues 5-6 pounds and only some very small stripers. So we moved from that structure to the Long Island side, and along the shore we found a nice pocket of large bluefish in very shallow water. Our passengers boated about seven, ranging 10 to 12 pounds, all caught on light tackle and Creek Chub poppers. They took home a load of bluefish filets to be put in their smoker and used for an evening barbecue.
Scott Friedman of Westport and his father, Dr. Robert Friedman--a cardiac surgeon--fished with us in the afternoon, along with two friends. They had fun reeling in striped bass around the Norwalk Islands and Westport. Some blues also came in on Fin-S lures. We had to stay fairly close to home to avoid being caught in the thunderstorms that had been forecast--and which did arrive about 15 minutes after we landed at the dock.
On Sunday morning we sailed with Cincinnati resident, Dr. Chris Meyer and his two sons and daughter aboard. His uncle Art from upstate NY also came along. They had a great day fishing on the Long Island side of the Sound, bringing in bluefish up to 9 pounds on poppers--and then they had non-stop action with another school of blues in the 2-3 pound range. A 20-inch fluke was also caught on the Fin-S lures that have been so hot this year.
Monday's trip was with our regulars, Virginia Kamsky of Wilson Point and NYC, with her young son, Michael. We fished again on the Long Island side, where Michael hooked into a nice six-pound blue, casting a chrome Creek Chub. We proceeded along the shoreline, in pursuit of a more active body of fish, and we found non-stop action at the Nissaquoque, where about a dozen and a half were brought in on Fin-S lures. Some of the filets will be part of an evening fish-fry.
