Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Saturday morning...a very, very hot and muggy day we had aboard regulars, Michael Cohen of NYC and Westport and his children, 7-year-old, Benji and his 3-year-old sister. We fished for only three hours because the weather was too oppressive for the youngest of the family, but our passengers did manage to catch some nice blues up to 10 lbs. and striped bass up to 26".
We began the new week Monday morning with William Forcier of Norwalk, who brought along his daughter, 13-year-old Allison, and his grandfather, 94-year-old Ralph Boyle, also a Norwalker. Besides some huge "Montauk" porgies, they caught many 7-9 pound bluefish on the surface, using Creek Chub lures, and also a few striped bass up to 27", while drifting sandworms.
Tuesday's clients were Murray Verlin of Stamford and NYC and his niece, Ms. Trina Hamlin --a native of Minneapolis MN, now living in NYC. Trina is not only a good fisherwoman, she's a very talented professional vocalist. Within five minutes of leaving the dock, we found bluefish crashing on the surface off of Westport. They were caught on light tackle, with Gag Grabber poppers and Creek Chubs; they ranged from 7 to 9 pounds. Looking for a change of pace, we went in search of porgies and found a nice school in deep water off of Sherwood Island--providing steady action with fish up to 16".
On Wednesday we fished with Jim Winters of Norwalk, who brought his father-in-law, Peter Burster of Port St. Lucie, FL. The weather was sunny and hot, with no wind, and as soon as we got on the water we found bluefish finning, and the twosome got several in the 4-6 pound range, using surface plugs. They also caught two striped bass 24-26" and more than two dozen porgies, keeping five, although there were ten keepers in the lot.
Friday's trip took place during another scorcher. We had Mark Patten of Darien and his son, Andrew--entertaining friends from Texas, Stephen Hasenflu and Sergio Zirant. All the youngsters were 16 years old. Everyone got into bluefish on the surface off of Cockenoe--the first time any of them caught bluefish--in the 4-6 pound range, all brought in on topwater lures, and only three were kept. The boys wanted to try something different, and we switched over the tackle in pursuit of porgies and found a nice porgy hole--bringing in more than two dozen scup with a dozen keepers in the lot that were taken home for the dinner that evening.
