Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Wednesday we fished with Jim Winters of Norwalk, who brought his father-in-law, Peter Burster of Port St. Lucie, FL. The weather was sunny and hot, with no wind, and as soon as we got on the water we found bluefish finning; the twosome got several in the 4-6 pound range, using surface plugs. They also caught two striped bass 24-26" and more than two dozen porgies, keeping five, although there were ten keepers in the lot.
Friday's trip took place during another scorcher. We had Mark Patten of Darien and his son, Andrew--entertaining friends from Texas, Stephen Hasenflu and Sergio Zirant. All the youngsters were 16 years old. Everyone got into bluefish in the 4-6 pound range on the surface off of Cockenoe--the first time any of them caught a blue--bringing all of them in on topwater lures, and keeping only three. The boys wanted to try something different, and we switched over their tackle in pursuit of the porgies we found in a nice hole--bringing in more than two dozen scup with a dozen keepers in the lot that were taken home for the dinner that evening.
We had a day off on Saturday, but we sailed early Sunday with Dave Ellis of of Darien and three 8-year-old boys, including his son, Sam. The trip started out on the slow side, but when found an active porgy hole, the kids baled the scup nonstop--with the largest being 16". A nice blue was lost at the boat, but was the day's only bluefish sighting.
Tuesday's trip was booked by Dan Faricy of Boise ID, who treated two Greenwich residents to a day aboard "My Bonnie". His guests were father and son David and T.J. Sarda. They had a great morning catching bluefish on the surface around four miles offshore. Again, the action was continuous for the anglers--both with surface plugs and a fly rod.
Although it's still early in the season for false albacore in our area, some of our friends have seen them out there, and our sometimes-mate, Emilio (Amin) Pandolfi has already caught a few, using a 1-oz Crippled Herring lure.
