Anna Maria Fishing Charters - March Fishing Action

Capt. Tom Chaya
March 30, 2014
Anna Maria - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring time fishing has been great around the cool fronts. We are targeting many species at this time of year. This is the best time of year to hook up on big snook. They are hungry and a bit less wary as the water warms. Bob Hammond and family had a big day on snook catching a half dozen fish over 30 inches. They also connected on big trout. Large "gator" trout are feeding in the shallow bars and spoil islands. Hank Shulhoff from Ohio had the biggest of the week at 30 inches and weighed just under 8 pounds. Redfish are working the deeper hard bottom and oyster bars. Their numbers will increase as the water temperatures rise.
School sized Kingfish have moved into area waters in the 30 -50 foot depths over hard bottom. Pompano and permit are roaming the beaches and passes. Shrimp, sandfleas, and jigs have worked well in the ditches off the beach. A couple of reports of small bonefish were in the same areas which is rare in waters this far north of their region. Dick McNabb and crew from Tennessee had limits of pompano and permit up to 8 pounds. Sheepshead are winding down after their spawn but can be found around pass docks and rocky reefs. Spanish mackerel and bluefish rounded out a nice week of fishing.
