Mangrove Snapper Frenzy

Capt. Tom Chaya
July 20, 2014
Anna Maria - Saltwater Fishing Report

As usual July bring a feeding frenzy of mango on just about any structure. Offshore reefs have the bigger ones in the 15 plus inch range. Small shiners or sardines are the best bet. Large shrimp are also excellent but many other species will eat up your money. Lightest tackle is always best with 20 pound or less leader and hooks no larger than 1/0. Gag grouper are also in these same areas but much heavier tackle is needed to ring them up. Spanish mackerel are abundant on the surface of these areas and we also had a few kingfish up to 20 pounds.

The inshore scene still has abundant sea trout over deep grass. Early mornings on moving tides are the key.

Anna Maria Fishing Forecast:

Look for snapper fishing to be excellent thru the late summer. Redfish should start schooling in the next month

Target Species:

Reds, snapper, trout
