Crystal River - Saltwater Fishing Report
Hello Everyone,
Ahhh, I love Fishing in Florida in SHORTS AND A T-SHIRT…..IN FEBRUARY!!!!!
We all have been asking for warm weather and we have definitely been answered. With all the warm weather we have been having the change in our winter fishing pattern has happened extremely fast. Since we had the same weather pattern last year and it proved to provide us with great fishing last spring, I am looking forward to another great year of Nature Coast Fishing. This warm weather will help the Nature Coast prove its name as the waters surrounding Crystal River will start to flood with life.
With the waters beginning to warm just as fast as the weather the fishing is also soon to be firing on all cylinders. From outside the mangroves to every nook and cranny in between our fish are changing their feeding patterns from a winter pattern of eating one large meal a day to many smaller meals. This is the main reason our Fishing is always better during these times.
The Speckled Trout fishing has started off with a bang proving that our fishery is sustaining itself in a manner that should be beneficial to the fish and us as anglers as well. Consistent limits have been easy to come by since the bite has caught flame. Making long drifts to find smaller schools of large Speckled Trout has proved to be the best way of targeting this species. I have been using a glow or watermelon colored "lil Jon" by Mirror Lure paired with a ¼ ounce jig head to target these crowd pleasing fish. The Presentation that I have been finding to work consistently is a very slow twitch and pause method, however, in deeper water I have been finding these fish to be wanting a faster more violent presentation. Working your lure until you are consistently getting bites is the best way to figure out the daily pattern that the fish are going to want.
As for the Redfish Fishing, we are starting to see a lot of our fish moving out onto the outer islands of our mangroves making them much easier to target. We are targeting this hard fighting fish around oyster bars, hard bottom, and current edges using mostly live Shrimp. As for all the other target species such as Black Drum, Triple Tail, Snook, Cobia, Jacks, and sheepshead, I am already seeing signs of great patterns setting up for this springs fishing season.
I am extremely excited for the next month of fishing as we are coming into my favorite time of year. There is nothing better than waking up to a beautiful spring morning on the waters of Crystal River with fish of all kinds feeding like crazy.
