Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Feb. is it over yet?

The St. Johns River water is still cold. Trout fishing is very spotty, and closed for harvest. And the Mayport Jetties give up a fish here and there.

Sheepshead are also spotty, and I'm getting more bites from them in the creeks or shallower waters than anywhere else.
Red Snapper is also closed. So many people are heading offshore for a measily 15 Seabass at 12 inches, and a few triggerfish. But you sure have to work through the small Seabass to get on those 12 plus inchers. But I find it not worth the fuel spent for not many Seabass.
The ole days are gone, I guess. I remember when it was well worth the short trip offshore to head out maybe 8-12 miles, for a coolerful of tastey Seabass when the inshore waters got way too cold for any decent action.
But that should start to change. It's all about length of days!

Creek fishing is warm, but not hot all the time.
I've never been a creek guy. And try it from time to time. But the call of the deeper larger water always calls me back. And I certainly don't spend that much time in the shallows to perfect it.
But, this month and with the water temps, all I can do is keep on plugging.
One recent day we caught a tagged Redfish with 35 spots that was a 10 pounder, with dead shrimp because there was no live to be had.

A few Trout, Black Drum, and small pup reds we've found in the ICW.

I'm booking days in April. And that's when I really expect a change in water temp. March may bring some better fishing, but April I belive will mean more to us in N.E. Florida this year than in years past.

Jacksonville Fishing Forecast:

Think March and April....March one reopens my favorites, Speckled Trout.
I say "let the hunt begin."
