March Jacksonville Florida

Capt. Dave Sipler
March 21, 2010
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's been one long winter. But even though I've fished in the last few day in full fleece to a t-shirt and shorts. The thermometer is up and down, as usual this time of year.

Water temps are up. Can't believe I'm excited to see 57-58 degrees on the ole RayMarine C-120 screen.

In the last week, I've been out hunting Speckled Sea Trout 3 times. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and coming up tomarrow, Monday.

The worst day.....not because of the fishing was Saturday the first day of spring on the 20th.
It was wall to wall boats and people everywhere.
Not everyone is like me, they haven't fished all winter long. And been there done that, from air temps in the teens and water temps from the 40's.

So the 20th was supposed to be wonderful weather. And it was. But what ruined it was the fact that we just do not have enough water around here to "house" all the boats any longer.

You'd think $2.80 a gallon unleaded, would hold people back....not yet.

We caught a handful of trout early. Before all the wakes, and traffic in the local creeks. And a handful of small Yellowmouth Trout in the river. Anchoring on a decent spot at the jetties/inlet was a parking lot.

Earlier in the week, we caught loads of nice fat Specks. Averaging 18-19 inches, while the waters were quiet.

The bottom bite in the river's still a bit slow. But catch the tide right and a few Reds in the big boy range can be coaxed on some blue crabs.

Whiting chasers report that the Big Reds are on the beach. So a slow drift while catching Whiting can hook you up on a monster Redbass. And all ya need is a small piece of shrimp. Just cover Ground!

Looking for that magical 60 degree plus water temp in the St. Johns river to set things in real motion.

As you'll see in these photos, the fishing attire is not completely yet devoid of jackets and fleece, and watch caps.

But spring has sprung, finally. And I'll continue tracking those larger Trout.

Now if only fuel was $1.50 a gallon, I'd be fishing other places on these heavy traffic weekends. Because there is areas out of the hub that I'd love to be.

Soon, my delux one rate covers all trip, will be inacted. It's a wise choice to pick that trip, versus cheaping yourself out of a good day on primo areas, out of the "hub". Plus, I have a special going too...visit www.captdaves.com and email me about how you can fish two days for $500.
And check out my daily reports at: www.jacksonvillefishingreports.blogspot.com for endless photos, video, editorials and reports.

More Fishing Reports:

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
