Jacksonville Fishing Report for Amelia Island & Mayport

Capt. Dave Sipler
August 4, 2003
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This action is so HOT, if you don't have fun, you need to forget about fishing!!!

Near-Coastal Report - 8/4/03

The water was warmer yesterday, and the incoming tide was so absolutely green and clear that we could see fish swimming down on the bottom in 10 feet of water as they cruised the sandy flats.

I suppose the Easterly breeze pushed some super gin clear water inshore, and it was beautiful!

How 'bout the fishing? PHENOMENAL!!!!

The fish must have have loved the clear water. Our first stop along the beach had us hooked up into fish right away. I couldn't keep four rods baited up and casted out fast enough.

Here's a list of what we caught in just a few hours all in one spot:

Sharks to 25 pounds

Jacks

Ladyfish

POMPANO - the "eaters we came there for!"

huge bull WHITING - "the "eaters we came there for!"

All on light tackle, and dang was it fun.

From line screamers to jumpers, we had it all.

We filled the box with prime dinner fish and about at the high tide the bountiful bites were about over.

So, off to another "eater" fish spot. We toured the river as we traveled to the industrial area where we were gonna fish, and needed the falling tide to start at this point in the day.

And what a nice day it was. Cooler with sun in and out made for just the right temperature.

The tide started running so I positioned the boat at our industrial docks where I knew the BIG Croakers and possibly a nice Redfish would be waiting for a meal.

The second cast out by one of my anglers and he got smashed by a nice fish. "keep tight on him" I yelled from the bow, while getting a drink from the cooler.

The fish tried to bull dog him back into the docks but he managed to perplex the fish away.

And up pops a fine 26" Redfish, two minutes after I said there's possibly a nice Red in there.

(do I know my spots or what?)

Next,we started to catch what we came there for, good ole St. Johns River Croakers. Not the hugest fish in the river, but as we picked thru them we came up with some 12-14 inchers perfect for the fish fry plans.

It's a bit early for the big Croakers, right now. But we got what we came for and the nice keeper Redfish too.

Our day ended with a half dozen 1-2 pound POMPANO, a dozen big Bull Whiting, the Redfish, and a half dozen keeper sized Croakers, in the fish box for dinner.

But the action we had the first 3 hours of the trip had me absolutely wore out.

To put it simply. If you want to catch fish, and lots of them, with absolute line screamers thrown in to keep you on your toes, and test your Ligh Tackle savviness. And some of the best eating fish around, the "Florida Pompano". I have the charter for you.

And to make things even better, we won't have a soul in another boat around us, and the area is beautiful to boot. (we were all alone at my industrial docks spot too, but it isn't the nicest looking area though.)

I'm not even catching these fish, and I'm having the time of my life with my clients. It's that fun.

I wrote a previous report about this same area and what fun we had. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm repeating myself, but I'm excited.

If all goes well, we could even catch a TARPON, from the same spot, as we did the other day, in a another previous report.

Take a minute to look at my "Recent Catches" pages on my web site. Your smilin' face could be there too, for the whole earth to see on the "world wide web".

Till next tide, go do the right thing. Go fishin'.

More Fishing Reports:

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
