Jacksonville Fishing Report for Amelia Island & Mayport

Capt. Dave Sipler
August 17, 2003
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

A CHANGE HAS COME, HURRAY!!!

If you frequent my reports page, recieve them as an e-mail or how ever you read them, you surely noticed that our water temp was a huge issue, during the last few months.

It's not all over, not at least till the Fat Tarpon starts singing......

But we've experienced just what I thought would take place, and that was a Full Moon in conjunction with a "time of year" happening.

And what's so significant about this time of year??

Bait movement, and Mr. Redfish getting primed and ready, to eat a lot of them.

Sure, that's a simple way of saying it, but I believe it's actually much more.

Rain, swelling the St. Johns, a full moon, the time of year, and the water temp is warmer!

Yes, the Ocean water's warmer, now!

So either way, things are better than they have been for weeks and months.

Redfish.

They're back!

And they are big. Not as huge as I like 'em.

But a legal fish isn't what you'll be catching.

But rather an average of a 32 incher at 10-12 pounds.

(this weeks avarage)

They may not have ever left some areas for some people, but that doesn't concern me in the least.

They are back and feeding on all the bait at the inlet.

And that's where I fish.

Along with the silver Mullet running down the beach there's some Pogies too. In my color scope I see huge balls of Glass Minnows also.

Jeez I'm glad to see ya' fella's!!

Monster Sharks, Tarpon, Redfish, Big Seabass & Black Drum are all at my favorite fishing hole right now.

There's Tarpon in the Nassua River, and the Sound also.

I've been seeing some, and giving them a try. But the fish are scattered out just enough that massive ammounts of chum is needed to attract the fish that are there to the boat/baits.

My partner got a 100 pound Tarpon the other day.

But I can't say where. "Trade secret", I swore to it and dropped it in the vault.

If bait is everywhere around you. FISH THERE for Tarpon!

My Favorite Time Of Year Is Approaching Fast.

I'm so geared up I lay awake at night just thinking about it.

I have new reels. Accurate's Twin Drag Boss Platinums.

Ready for any 'poon or bull Redfish, or Shark that decides it's gonna try and kick my clients butt.

(the best drag system bar none)

The For Reelin II is getting a brand new Yamaha HPDI 200 this week, bolted to her transom.

Like Tim the tool man Taylor always says; "MORE POWER", with fuel economy and quiet as a church mouse.

Extended range, that's what I'll like.

The ole 200 Evinrude has seen better days and is time to be retired to a weekenders boat transom. So she'll be getting a new home down in Sebring, Florida.

Rods, Nothing but G.LOOMIS for me and my clients.

You want top of the line tackle? I got it.

The "BBR" series rods by Loomis are the best I have ever used for kickin big fish butt!

Can you say....MAG HEAVY??? If so that's what's needed in the ripping currents between the St. Johns River Jetties to get your prized trophy, be it a Tarpon the "king of fishes", a high flying Blacktip, or a big 45 inch, 40 pound Redfish. (The kind I'm known for!!)

No fairy wands, plastic reels, or wire hooks used, for these bruisers.

Aug thru Nov.- Redfish, and the congregation of super breeder size Redfish to 50 pounds!

Jetty & Inlet Tarpon - Do you think "Boca Grande" is "sporting"?

-Think again matey....We anchor, we don't drift around. It's still the wild, wild west of Tarpon fishing up here, in N.E. Florida!

Black Tip Sharks (hundred pounders, plus), everyone has them around the state.

-I have a love/hate relationship with them, actually. I hate to loose them after 4 jumps. And I love to see everyone on the boat try their hand at boating one.

Then get it to the boat, try and snap a picture. As I get thrashed and pummeled. (Gotta love that, huh?)

I love this time of year!

So come on down. I will guareentee you, a quality experience.

1-3 anglers (no crowding, stress is on quality!)

1/2 & 3/4 days.

Large Groups thru my "Anglers Club charter service", recieves a free charter!!

Company inquiries invited.

till next tide,

Capt. Dave

More Fishing Reports:

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
