Jacksonville Fishing Report for Amelia Island & Mayport

Capt. Dave Sipler
October 8, 2007
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jacksonville, Mayport, Florida Fishing Report

10/6 & 10/7 - two days on the river, under the clouds

10/6/07

Fished the APP - "Count the Spots" tournament with two great guys Jim and Stewart. I got really lucky. I was supposed to have 4 passengers aboard but ened up with just two guys that were ready to FISH.

The tournament was just a fun event with some BBQ afterwards. Based on points per certain species, and the most points for a Redfish with a lot of spots.

But we never caught a single Redfish. Instead we had Black Drum, the Redfishes ugly cousin, but in my book a better fishto eat. "Pup" Drum are great Blackened too.

We ened up with alot of points I think we had 40, because we were into the one pointers pretty heavy, Mangrove Snappers, and Seabass. And we kept some of the larger of the two. Pictures proved youre catches so releasing was allowed.

I had a great time and would do it again next year.

Ended up with the Drum, Trout, sea Bass, Croakers, Mangrove Snappers, & Flounder.

The fore Cast was for 25 knot winds and rain, but we only had over cast skies and big winds at the end of the day.

So it all worked out.

10/7/07

Had the Mathy family aboard the next day. Again, another cloudy day with threats of rain all around us.

Hit the bottom right off at the first spot.

DRUM...right away. Large Croakers too.

Then tried float-rigging for some Trout but for some reason couldn't find any where we were. Then came the heavy duty winds around 11am. Which really put a damper on my Trout hunting.

So we went back to bottom fishing, caught more Drum and a big ole 7 striped Jetty Snapper aka: Sheepshead off a rock pile, that was infested with Mangrove snappers. So we left there and went back to get another Drum.

Over cast, cooler, and lots of wind. But we made a great day out of the weather.

Looks like the rest of the week is going to get better.

I know I have to get back on those Trout, again.

Because I know where the eater sized Black Drum are, that's for sure.

**RESERVE NOW FOR FALL.....November 1st starts my favorite time of year. Novemeber 1st and 2nd are reserved already, with some regular clients I have trained to get the best tides and times, first.

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
