Jacksonville Fishing Report for Amelia Island & Mayport

Capt. Dave Sipler
January 9, 2008
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

1/8/08 - COME AND GET 'EM WHILE THE GETTING IS GOOD!

Yes, this week the getting has been great...and I'm talking Speckled Trout.

70-80 degree weather low to no wind and calm seas.

Remember that there is a 5 day forecast given every night on the "local yokal" news.....so why not take advantage of it?

Every single year the first two weeks of January is usually pretty damn nice.

I saw a shirtless individual anchored at the inlet yesterday. It was that dang warm...IN JANUARY!

Don't understand it, but ya think local Jacksonville people would understand the weather here.

Yesterday was great. The Trout were chewin and I even threw some MirrOlures for the big water Trout and scored several up to 6 pounds!

I don't get it...winter here is the time to fish, not in the summer's heat will you consistantly catch fish like you can now.

But when it comes to blizzards in the north, that's when I'd figure people would want to get out of that for a bit of R&R.

The world is just backwards as I see it. When it's warm I don't want to go to some place Hot as hell.

And when it's freezing cold, I'd want to go somewhere nice and warm.

But July is still the big time month for North America I guess.

Scored a 6 pound Sheepshead on the Float-rig too on Tues. 1/8/08

The day before (1/7/08)I went with a friend in the creeks and he did great on Trout to 4 pounds, he left my big water butt in the dust, as he knows every inch of that creek.

Then there was Sunday, 1/6/08 when myself and client Kirk smoked the big fatties all in one spot on our float-rigs and live shrimp, plus added a 2 limits of Yellowmouth Trout, 3 Drum and 2 Sheepshead to the fish box.

If your local, I'm as easy as a phone call or an email.

I know my weather.

If you're not, I can still help you pick the best times to fish.

Because this is it, right now!

Now come February 1st, Speckled trout will be closed for harvest. We can catch and release, which is fine.

And will also target other species as usual.

If we get a decent day, which means low winds in the winter. You're bound to go home with a big bag of fillets. And call me to find out my winter rates that kick in in January thru March.

So get whole the getting is good.

I know I'm stocking up and havin' a ball doing so.

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
