GOING SHALLOW, THEN DEEP in Jacksonville

Capt. Dave Sipler
April 7, 2012
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

What makes the perfect day....?

-One Angler
-No wind
-A great tide

That's what we had on April 3rd.

Started out far from the inlet and it's infestation of "green scourage fish", also known as Bluefish. They've run me out of the area before. But this year I'm really sick and tired of them.

So Bob "the Traveller" and I ran the Jettywolf as far away as we could in the morning with out passing by some great areas, as the tide rose nicely.

First stop, a rock pile. Casting rattling poppin corks and live shrimp.

From first cast to the last cast Bob caught Trout and Reds.

The TROUT were infested......which is the kind of infestation I LIKE!

Easily getting a big box of fish before 9am.

Limits of Speckled Trout and a limit of Redfish.
(Trout 12, and Redfish 4 for two persons)

The Trout were sucking up the live shrimp off the surface like tiny "snickers bars".

Then, we went further up river. Had some fried Trout fillets and gatorade after capturing a load of perfect sized Live Mullet. We waited for the tide to start falling.

And when it did.....HANG ON. THE BIG RED BEASTS WERE CHEWIN'.

It was a great day. Unlike any day I can have when playing "a river party boat" with 4 people.

Quality trips are 1-2 persons. NOT 4, I hate to say. It's just too hard to manage 4 people of varying fishing skills or none at all. And do what we did today, while casting the corks to a small spot along the bank.

Last weeks BIG Trout:

More Fishing Reports:

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
