Port Canaveral - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report 04-01-10
A nice forecast for a change will hopefully allow several days of fair offshore weather. We headed out Thursday in clear skies, and smooth sea's for a bottom fishing trip with a family of 4 down in Florida on vacation. Smooth sea's meant a quick ride out to Pelican Flats. We made a few pass's trolling a variety of gear to test the waters, but with sea temp's still well below 70 at the reef there was not a real good chance of sucess. Bottom Fishing at the reef's however, is always active. This trip's bite was a little off from the last, with a change in the Sea Bass catch. The last trip only a couple day's ago to the same location resulted in several nice sized Sea Bass, wheras this trip saw very few, and
most well undersized. The Triggers we caught were nice sized, with the largest at 21". A few Mangrove and Yellowtail Snapper, and a Porgy added to the icebox. The fish we had to release would have filled the icebox nicely, including the largest Red Snapper of the day at 15lbs, as well as a Cobia that was too close to size to call, and for safety (mine) it went back to grow a little more.
The calm sea's and no doubt spring vacation for many had the sea's busy with boat traffic, with a dozen or more at any time on Pelican, and many seen on the ride in at other sites. A lot of radio traffic took place, but no great sucess's were reported, with a few fish here and thee. Water temp reports at the east edge of the Gulfstream were 74 deg, so some easternly winds and clear skies may help work the warmer water in a little faster. Perhaps the cold water could hold to the north of us a little while, allowing the Pelagics to stay here a little longer, rather than doing a quick pass by!
