Fishing Report 04-08-10

Capt. Henry Hauch
April 10, 2010
Port Canaveral - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather started going downhill overnight, but with forecast calling for Friday to be worse we had to take our shot this day. With winds and waves from the east, the direction we were headed, the ride was slow and wet. We were headed out 30 miles to look for AJ's. Needless to say with choppy and steep waves, holding position with the stern into the current, but the steep waves coming from the starboard side, made it challenging, both at the helm, and for the angler. We marked only a few fish at the deeper wrecks and had a few baits hit, but despite both live bait and jigs being used no hookups. With winds starting to build, we worked our way in, which was a much smoother ride. We stopped by some artificial reef sites, and managed a few dinners worth of keepable Snapper, including Lane, Vermillion and Mutton. Porgy were also added to the icebox. A few Grunts (Tomtate), which were 12" long, and thick were kept, and added to breakfast. I'm not into Grits, so no Grits and Grunts, but Bacon and eggs went nicely with them. A few Cobia report despite the poor weather, were heard on the VHF. These were a few miles from shore, both to the north and south of port.

Next week looks bad for boating, with winds around 20kts, gusting to 30kts. The seas will continue building until the winds settle.
