Port Canaveral Offshore 5/29/10

Port Canaveral - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report 05/29/10

A busy 3 day weekend, following a week of poor offshore conditions, meant heavy boat traffic, and hungry fish. No tournaments running from Port Canaveral, but very nice sea's had many people out. I had 4 guest onboard, and the targeted spesis was Mahi. We headed out to 230' to start the day, with the plan of working our way in. On the way out some very large weed patch's were seen, and a few pass's were made, but they were in at 70', and no action was seen.

We stopped at the City's Bardges, to try a few shots at the bottom, with one real good hookup. This fish, likely a large AJ, took a 12" butterfly jig about 100' off the bottom, and bent the rod in half. It was a very strong fight until the fish straightened the hook! Not being our primary goal, we headed to start the Mahi hunt. Scattered weeds were common, but the 150'-160' depth's yeilded the most action.

The water was warm and clean in to 20 miles offshore. We ran both flatlines and a planer on the downrigger. The best action came off the single planer, with a naked Ballyhoo run about 20' down. We had a handful of strikes on the the planer tripping the release clip (cant call it a "knock-down", perhaps a 'knock-up'). In all we put 5 Phins in the icebox, 3 were lost during the fight, and a handful of close, but no cigars.

Weather was great, and the winds stayed light till the days end. Afternoon cloud cover
kept it from getting too hot. Most of the fish caught today were singles. Only one mahi had a second with it, but it was on the small side, and lost during the fight. A good day of catching, and happy Anglers made it a good Fishing trip.
