Port Canaveral - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing Report 06-11-10
With ideal conditions 2 guest and myself made our way out of Port Canaveral at 5:30am. Mahi was the target of the day. We proceeded due East till our first weed appeared just past 100'. We sent lines out with a few bite-off's before bringing a Cuda in. We stayed in the area a little longer with only a small Mahi to show for it. Moving on we headed for deeper water, finding weeds at 135'. More time spent with little to show, until another small, but keeper Mahi was put in the icebox. Lines back out, and another 30 minutes until a good sized fish made a run. This fish at least made it a fun fight for my guest, but it turned out to be another Cuda, though a nice sized one.
Back into the sea it went, and we decided to keep working our way to deeper waters. We made our way to 300' with no real weeds or debris, and radio reports out to 450' with no action. We blind trolled over the Cones, and managed to come across some 'Schoolies'. These fish were all under sized, so no more Mahi for the icebox. We headed for shallower water to see if some Kings could be caught, as radio traffic had them active in the morning. By the time we made it in to 8A, water temp's reached 89.4 deg, and fish seemed to shut down. We did make a slow troll over the reef, with one very nice fish, likely a large King by the run it made, however halfway through the fight we lost it. This fish took a flatlined Ballyhoo, but not a mark was on the bait, however the hook was twisted around, so it likely foul hooked itself. The sun was beating down, and my guest were ready to head in. Fortionatly they have taken many Charters before, including ones where the returned with no fish, so we at least had some keepers for a few dinners, and some good fighting action along the way. I have been having a throttle plate issue on my Port motor, and it finally gave way as we started to head in. Even so we still managed to "Limp in" at 30mph!
