Some Problems with Sea Grass...

Sebastian - Saltwater Fishing Report

We've been out a few times over the past two weeks, and most of the action has been in the Sebastian Inlet, where we got some large jacks, flounder, blues, and pompano.
But the grassy areas that had been some of our favorite haunts for more than 15 years have been "balding," and the fish population that usually hung around that sea grass has moved elsewhere. It appears that this problem is widespread throughout central Florida fisheries, and it's quite discouraging to think this situation might be slow to reverse itself. Last year and two years ago we had massive fish kills following severe cold spells; this year we've had much warmer weather, but something is killing the sea grass. Lots of theories abound, but no one seems to know how to accelerate regrowth of this valuable plant life.
Sportsfishing is not a science, and none of us can control the temperature, the winds, or other environmental conditions when we set out in the morning with bait, tackle and strategy for our trip. If everything were ideal for us every day of the year, we'd have to find some very creative excuses for a poor catch....
