Bass catching is in a frenzy on the Marsh for shiner fishermen right now! Yesterday Scott took a trip onto the Marsh and with 12 dozen shiners his trio of clients, (they called themself the Gypsies from Leesburg), made everyone count. It was a day of wind, sun, clouds, and bass, bass, and more bass. If you put the boat in the right place the fishing turns to catching and the catching includes double digit fish. Scott was working on the Marsh, not the farm and without being too specific, the trees weren't very far away. Tightly clumped palm trees could be almost touched.
Today he is out with Don Rice and by 11:00 they were getting another 6 dozen shiners. Don is here with his two sons, ages 11 and 14, and they are hammering them. Don opted to use shiners with his sons in mind. If there choices can give you an idea of the catching: They were scheduled for a 1/2 day and it is raining. They extended today's trip to a full day. They booked a full day for both Friday and Saturday. I would have to say they are really excited, have caught more fish than they ever have, and they have all caught the biggest fish they ever had. I won't know obviously until 3:00 just how many, or just how big but will pass it on later.
Yesterday, a client I had on with Patrick Slattery on the 10th of this month, Danny Lyons and his Mrs. hit the Marsh. With shiners in hand for the Mrs., Danny never got further than the entrance to the Marsh. Fishing the better part of the day they caught bass after bass. The Mrs. using her shiners, and Danny, (are you ready for this), using a chug-bug. Danny never changed bait all day and hauled bass after bass on the top water bite. It goes to show you that trying a bait is something you should always do, even if it's not so written in the book. Needless to say, we can expect them to return over and over again.
I fished for a short while in the AM with a friend. I hurt my back last week so I could only fish for a short while but had a great time. We started in the SW end of the Farm using rattle traps and jerk bait and managed a few smaller bass. Moving out in the open areas away from the stumps we worked areas were the hydrilla aren't quite so dense. Steve, using a Carolina rig, placed some nice size bass in the boat, and I using a rattle trap did likewise. The wind picked up and we moved forward to the Marsh, but the wave action was too much for my back so Steve took me back to the dock.
We will be out there every day but Thanksgiving this week and will keep you posted on what we find. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday and get some fishing in if you can.
