Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

I want to start this report by thanking all the wonderful fishermen and fishergals that stop me at the ramp or on the water and say hello. You make my job and love of bass fishing that much finer and I thank you for that great gift of friendship. I also wish to thank each and everyone of you that post your reports after spending the day out there. And to Danny: Thanks for your support! Fishing on the Marsh with artificial bait has been extremely sporadic. Fish are to be had, but you will have to work just a bit harder than normal and you will need to cover more ground as the schools have been a little inactive. Some of the areas that you can expect to find some activity include the intersections of the ditches on Farm 13 and also the SW corner of the Farm. Several bait will work but the most succesful back there has been a 1/4 weighted Carolina rig with a 6-8" worm, and our most successful color has been watermelon. On the Marsh there are a couple of large schools located at Twin Palms and down in the NW corner in the palms trees. The most successfull bait there has been the rattle trap, (chrome/blue) The real success stories however are coming on shiners and the last two days have been no exception. Scott and I had both boats out with a fantastic group of 5 from Atlanta, Georgia area. The trip was the treat of Chuck Jordan and his brother Tom in honor of their father Charlie's birthday. Yesterday we started out with artificial baits and ended up with shiners. The guys quickly found out that using shiners does not make the catching a lay-down situation but truly takes a magical timing and finesse to get these critters over, around and through the lay-down. After two days, 24 dozen shiners and numerous hookups with the lay-downs and stumps running interference the fellows summarily said with great enthusiam that they had a great time. Charlie, in honor of his birthday did in fact manage a fish that went 10.25 pounds and another that went 6. Not a shiner went unscathed and our thumbs show the damage of a lot of good fish in the boat. Several nice fish were caught on free-lined dead shiners. Specifically we have been working a large school of pre-spawn fish located in the NW area of the Marsh. They are in the heaviest lay-down cover and stumpy area of the whole lake, but the tussles with the brush are worth the fish that can be taken. It is important to note that when hooking a fish out here it is imperative to get that fish on top of the water and keep him there in order to land it. If you don't a stump will be your reward and a hook and shiner will be your cost. The bass in this area will be responding to rattle traps with enthusiasm as soon as the weather stabilizes. Good luck out there and say hi. We're glad to help when we can!
