Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Capt. George Welcome
September 10, 2001
Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Date Fished: 9/10/01

Water Temperature: 88

Water Clarity: 1 foot

The weather down here, as I am sure you know is extremely wet. Getting blown off the water early is a strong possibility as the storms have been pretty severe. Don’t wait until the last minute when you see them coming, as the lightning striking ground in Florida is a common occurrence.

There is one common thread for all the reports for Stick Marsh/Farm 13 and that is the weeds are thick, water temperatures are high, water levels are high, there are several sources of current, and fishing is sporadic. However, those that persist will find areas holding fish.

Some of the fish we are seeing this year validates the extremely large spawn that we observed this past year. Yesterday for example, an eight-inch bass bit a six-inch Senko on a Carolina rig. Except for the rare fish, all have been fat and healthy so the future of this great fishery is ensured.

Hydrilla hides a great deal of the fish population at this time. Hydrilla goes through stages in its growth patterns with the final stage after it mats of falling back. What is matted today could be open tomorrow as the fall back occurs just a quickly as the matting does. What this simply means is that you need to check those areas that you know were good but have given up on because the last time you checked they were matted.

Top water bite is still good in the morning and should be tried several times throughout the day. Soft jerk baits, floating worms and swimming worms are all good bets to bring the bass out of the grass. Ditch edges on the Farm will give you a good shot.

Temperatures should start cooling down soon, the rains should lessen, and with this the fish will be getting more active. Keep an eye on the weather, drink lots of fluids and be sure to protect the skin. Keep casting as the next cast could easily be one of the huge Stick Marsh bass. See you out there.
