Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

The reasons that people are hooked on bass fishing are as varied as they are in numbers. I love it because of the serenity and beauty of nature, its inhabitants, and its ever-changing face. Yesterday was a day of which nature presented us with clouds boiling across the sky, pushed by winds that roared in our ears. Ospreys wheeled over the lake seemingly oblivious to those winds while Great Blue Herons plied the shorelines in search of another meal. Cormorants dove, Coots swam about, and the bass bit and bit and bit. In addition to the beauty of our surroundings 127 bass hitting top water baits and Carolina rigged baits gave us another 127 reasons to be on the lake today.
Date: 10/10/01 – Time: Daylight until 4:00PM – Surface water temps: 74 – Air temps: 74-83 – Weather: Cloudy, windy with occasional light rain – Baits used: Surface poppers and Senkos that were Carolina rigged.
Starting out from the ramp at daylight we immediately began working top water poppers on the Stick Marsh. Any opening that we could find was a likely target and by 10:00AM we had landed 27 bass up to 7-3/4 pounds. Every hit was one of excitement as the bass slammed the bait with a fury. Most of the bass were in the 2.5 – 4 pound with only one that was small.
From the Stick Marsh we decided to check the spillway out on Farm 13. The water is no longer running there but we did get a couple of bass working the grass lines with chug bugs. The water level we noted has gone from 24.5 ASL to 22.5 ASL, (above sea level).
We then headed out into Farm 13 and its irrigation ditches. With the wind blowing out of the east at 15 MPH plus there was sure to be some wind driven current on the center E/W ditch. In addition, there was a possibility that the pump house would be running, either pumping water into or out of the Farm. As we have told you many times previously, moving water is of major importance on this lake and if you find it you will find bass. Well, we found it and we found bass! Our big boy of the day was 10.5 pounds and came on a gold/w-flaked 5” Senko. As a matter of fact, all 100 bass that we caught on the Farm came on a myriad of Senko colors and sizes.
We saw the first boat on the water since our launch at the ramp at 2:30. I guess the wind kept most home. See you on the water. Say hi as you pass.
