Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Capt. George Welcome
October 24, 2001
Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Date fished: 10/23/01 – Time fished: 7:30 – 2PM – Weather: Cloudy and warm – Surface temps: 78 degrees

Baits used: Chug Bugs, Torpedoes, Frogs, Spinner baits, and Texas rigged soft plastics

Areas fished: West end of the Stick Marsh from the NW corner to the SW corner – SW area of Farm 13 from the shack to as far south as you can get.

Starting with top water baits we worked the Stick Marsh from the NW corner to the SW section. We found most of the fish caught on top water in the SW area of the Stick Marsh and the preferred bait was the Chug Bug. We found the fish quite scattered in that area but persistence paid off with 31 bass to 5 pounds coming to the boat. Most of the fish were located close to small patches of grass. Today we did not get one out of the heavier hydrilla although we did see a couple of smashes in the thickest of weeds.

We went from the Marsh to check the Pump House and Spillway on Farm 13 and then proceeded to the SW corner of the Farm. As is normal, bass are starting to move to this area. Working from just south of the shack on the west wall towards the deep SW we picked up several bass on Texas rigged worms and a couple on spinner baits, (gold w/gold blades). Pushing all the way to the back we found several bass. Most were smaller fish but we did manage to get a couple in the 4 pound range. They were directly next to edges of grass and stumps and very aggressive.

Total for the day: 48 bass with the biggest fish weighing 5 pounds. Almost all the bigger fish came on top water baits. A lot of casts, concentration, and quick hook sets made for a great day out here. Particularly fishing the Texas rigs took concentration and quick hands, as most hits were light. Watch the line for movement!

The weather has been a bit cantankerous lately with a lot of storms in the area. Always be alert to their movement and if lightening threatens don’t hesitate to get to the ramp. We will be out of these weather patterns soon but until we are be careful out there. Also be aware that wind can be a very bad part of these storms down here and be prepared to move if needed. Don’t get caught in stump areas! Prepare to move out well before any storm gets you in trouble.
