Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Capt. George Welcome
November 13, 2001
Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Date Fished: 11/6/01

Water Temperature: 70

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Day two of Jack Goldsmith and Kiley Coleman's foray on the Marsh was a lot sunnier, but the wind still had a bit of a push to it. Kiley had to catch a plane back to Virginia so it was to be a shorter day but with enthusiasm on high we forged forth to seek our worthy foe.

Starting in the spillway area it seemed that it would be a repeat of yesterday but the bite dropped by 8:30. We tried several other approaches to the spillway area and Jack pulled one out just a tad bigger than Kiley's bass from yesterday.

We then moved out and fished the pump house area and Carolina rigs produced more bites than the shiners did. However, in that area Kiley out fished Jack by a good margin.

Leaving the pump house we made a quick stop at the opening near the ramp that goes into the Stick Marsh but the bite was not substantial and all to soon the time to leave was upon us.

There were more people out today but again the wind kept the numbers of fishermen down. Based on the sampling that we did in the pump house area I would say that it should have been a good day to work artificial but I was too busy hooking up bait to give it much of a try.

We'll be back out there tomorrow so wave as you go by, or even better stop and say hi. Good fishing and good weather!

Date Fished: 11/8/01

Water Temperature: 69

Water Clarity: 1 foot

The sun worshipper had a brilliant day yesterday, with a gentle breeze that made it an ideal beach day. Early AM at launch time was a bit chilly but the temperatures came up almost as quickly as the sun appeared over the horizon.

Date fished: 11/8/01 - Time: Daylight till 1:00Pm - Weather: Couldn't have been better

Areas fished: Spillway, Farm 13, Pump house, E/W ditch on the eastern side - SW area of the Farm, and the SW area of the Stick Marsh.

Baits used: 1/4 ounce Jig tipped with a white shad, Carolina rigged plastics, Texas rigged Zoom Brush Hog, Spinner bait, Chug Bug. Preferred bait was Jig combo, followed by Texas rig, followed by Chug Bug.

We found fish in all of the locations that we fished with the heavier concentrations in the spillway area and the SW end of the Stick Marsh. There were no schools tightly packed in any of the areas but by persistence we were able to boat 22 by the time that we left. Bigger fish came in the spillway and we had a couple that was over 6 pounds.

For all those friend of ours that see us at the ramp and say hi: If you are looking for my black Suburban, it no longer is in use. I have a white Dodge 3500 pick-em-up. See you out there, tight lines and say hi if you get the chance.

Date Fished: 11/10/01

Water Temperature: 71

Water Clarity: 0

Date fished: 11/10/01 - Time: Daylight till 12 PM - Weather: Early AM in high 50's but warming quickly with the sun, crystal clear skies and no wind.

Area fished: 1 hour in the NW corner of the Stick Marsh and the balance of the day in the SW area of the Stick Marsh.

Baits used: Chug Bugs, White Spinner Bait 3/8 ounce, Popping Frog, and T-rigged Baby Brush Hog.

Fish caught with: Chug Bugs accounted for most fish, with the Popping Frog and Spinner bait following.

There were two things that we keyed on today. Clean water was one and loosely matted hydrilla number two. We worked most of the time in the SW area and followed several open trails well into the hydrilla heading eastward. The fish were spread out pretty good except when it came to the mats. By working the mats with a popping frog, and casting the Chug Bug to open holes we were able to pull out several fish from any mat that we worked. The nice thing was the size: except for a couple of fish all were between 4 and 6 pounds. No real big fish today but a very successful and fun day on the Stick Marsh.

Saw several old friends out there today and several that read our reports working in the same general area. See you out there!

Today’s report: Date fished: 11/12/01 - Time fished: Daylight till 3PM - Weather: Bluebird skies with cool morning and warming into the low 80's - Barometer: High for this area and still rising

Areas fished: SW end of the Stick Marsh - SW end of Farm 13 - West end of the E/W ditch in Farm 13.

Baits used: Chug Bugs, Spinner baits, Popping Frog, and non-weighted Senkos.

We started out in the SW area of the Stick Marsh following the same route and patterns of the last few weeks. The bite was very sporadic and slow and the fish we got were mostly on the smaller size. Spinner baits produced a couple but most of what we caught in this area came on non-weighted Senkos.

We moved from there to the SW end of Farm 13 with even lesser results and fish that were smaller yet. We worked our way out to more open water and went across the south end of the Farm trying here and there with nothing much going on.

We then moved to the west end of the E/W ditch and caught some better fish on the north side of the ditch using both spinner baits and non-weighted Senkos.

I only caught one Bass today on the Chug Bug. The spinner bait, "chartreuse with gold willows", caught the biggest fish of the day which only weighed in between 3 and 4 pounds. Most fish came on the Senkos.

The weather is changing today with rain showers and lower pressures. See you out there.
