Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Capt. George Welcome
November 19, 2001
Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Date Fished: 11/17/01

Water Temperature: 68

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

I had to replace 4 lights on the trailer, repair 3 wires, and get gas, so it was a tad late when I got to the lake. On the way through Fellsmere I saw a despondent looking "Sad Sack" standing on the side of the road pretending to fish in a puddle that had formed from yesterday's rain. The expression on his face was one of pure desperation as he made cast after cast to his 2' square puddle, so taking pity on this wretch I invited him to come to the Stick Marsh with me. On the way there he regaled me with tales of his fishing exploits, which fully explained why all the locals know him as "the world's worst fisherman". "Not to worry", I explained to Don, "there are so many fish in this lake that you are bound to get at least one.

Once into the Marsh we immediately hit the turbo switch and headed to the NW corner of the Stick Marsh. I had already explained to Don that the torpedo shaped lure with all the hooks would be good bait so he was pre-rigged. As I shut down the big motor and was lowering the trolling motor into the water Don cast downwind. Then I heard him muttering about needing his glasses to fix something as I watched a monster bass engulf the Chug Bug. Not seeing any tightening of the line I turned around in time to see Don messing with seat so that he could sit down. I couldn't believe it! Playing with a seat because he was too lazy to stand. Well, you all know the rest of the story as Don has tried to claim it was his quick catch and release method that he was practicing.

I heard his mutterings from time to time throughout the balance of the time we were out there. He did manage to regroup and catch a few as we skimmed across the Marsh in front of a brisk wind.

We fished from 8:45 to about 1:00. We fished the west side of the Stick Marsh using Chug Bugs. We landed 9 bass, got hit by 11, and had a fantastic day of laughter and camaraderie. By days end Don even had me convinced that letting the big ones go quickly is a good practice.

See ya on the water - say hi as you go by. Don't be bashful about asking for info at the ramp if you see me. We are profound believers of "share and learn"!

Date Fished: 11/19/01

Water Temp: 71

Clarity: 2-3 feet

Today the forecast was good with a 20% chance of rain and winds 5-10 out of the NE. Needless to say the weatherman couldn’t be further off than a rooster could have in predicting conditions.

When departing the ramp we had a moderate fog, which quickly turned into a pretty dense fog. The wind was blowing from the NW as forecasted but that would change quickly as soon as the fog lifted. Jack Goldsmith and Captain Rich Wader of National Bass Guide Service were my fishing partners for the day so despite the weather the day was destined to be a good one.

Starting in the NW area of the Stick Marsh we proceeded to Chug Bug, Chug Bug, and Chug Bug. Hey, it was work, but someone had to do it. Throughout the day we worked from the NW to the SW of the Stick Marsh. Near the end of the day we headed back to the NW area. We were looking for three things: Clean water, sparse hydrilla, and Bass and throughout the day we found all three. Rich and I never changed from the Chug Bug but Jack did throw a spinner bait occasionally and did land one with it. Jack also threw a ?????? top water and caught one or two on that. By days end we boated 25 Bass up to 5 pounds and missed several. All in all it was a great day that was enjoyed by all.

We did have Don with his friend Bill with us for a short while but they opted to head out for the Farm to see if they could get blown around a little better. I never did see them again but I could hear Don kind of sobbing every once in a while.

See you on the water. Enjoy the Marsh and have a great day.
