Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Date Fished: 8/21/02
Water Temperature: 89
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet
The heat is bearing down on us with tenacity and the water temperatures are raising quickly. At daylight yesterday the surface was at 89 degrees and by noon when we left the temperature had risen to 94.
The current generating areas have been closed down and water levels are dropping back to more normal levels for this time of year. The bass are moving to cooler water, but you don't have to look too far from the ditch edges to find this.
Look to hydrilla in open water areas to locate bass. Both Carolina rigs and Texas rigs will stand you in good stead in these areas. Play the hydrilla and your chances for a lunker are pretty good.
Remember; dress for the heat, drink plenty of fluids and use sun protection. Keep your baits in the water and be on your toes as the bites can be real light. See ya out there.

The Marsh is hot in more ways than one. If you are fishing past noon most days you will find it a tad warm. Yesterday we did have a light breeze, which helped to keep it a bit cooler, and plenty of cloud coverage. Light rains arrived at about 11AM and after some very exciting fishing we decided to not get the boat wet on top.
We spent the first part of the day working the center N/S ditch from the intersection southward and managed a few bass on various baits. The best fish came on a rattletrap. The hydrilla that lines the ditch was good and clean but not a lot of bass were hiding in it.
We finished out the morning at the pump house where there were plenty of bass that wanted to play. Carolina rigs were the rig of course and Senkos the bait of choice. Our close out total was 56. Always move to current if it exists as it can harbor a bonanza of bait and the bass sure do like that.
See you out there. Say hi if you get the chance. Remember that fluids and sun protection as well as rain gear and mosquito repellant for those early morning hours.

One of the questions that I see pretty regular is in reference to water levels. Everyone remembers the low periods. Everything is in tiptop shape and water levels pose no problems. However, and I can't say the however strongly enough, I still don't recommend running on the Marsh unless you have some idea of where you are going, and even then do it with caution. The sticks and stumps are still there even though you don't see them.
We spent considerable time on the Marsh today checking all the various areas that seem to hold bass during the summer. We found bass in the NW areas, around Twin Palms out in the middle of the Marsh, and along an old hunting road that runs from the NW to the SW. We were able to coax a few top water hits, but those were smaller fish compared to what we latched onto using a weightless T-rigged Senko.
We then went to the Farm and the roar of diesel engines drew us to the pump house on the east shore. It took but a few minor adjustments to the anchoring position before we found the most profitable path to draw our Carolina rigged Senkos. It was party time until about 1:30 when a t-storm that was moving south to north did an about face and headed eastward. With it came high winds and we needed to double-time the anchor reset in order to keep fishing. Fortunately the T-storm stayed well to the north as it passed and we were spared the need to run, but the wind sure did make the fishing interesting.
All in all it was another great day on the Stick Marsh/Farm 13 with the picture fish just adding icing to the already fantastic day of fishing. See you out there.
