Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Date Fished: 9/8/02
Water Temperature: 83
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet
Fishing on this lake for this time of the year is fantastic. If you get on the fish in most cases you will catch them. "See Stick Marsh/Farm 13 under "other topics".
The spillway is open in the SE end of Farm 13 but don't rush there expecting to see the production you have in the past. Although there are some fish there they are not packing the front row seats to chomp on your baits. However, it is a good are to give a few minutes.
The middle N/S irrigation fish is still holding lots of fish and they are still playing with the Carolina rigs. Experience has taught us the east side of this canal is the most productive way to throw your baits and we weren't let down today following that experience.
There are also fish on the southern end of this canal but the ones we found there were a tad smaller so it was off to the western end of the middle E/W ditch. As has been the case for the last two months fish can be found from the shack out to the first N/S ditch and they are willing chomping on a Carolina rig. Although I am sure there are some big ones through that area we didn't fish it long enough to get one.
This morning's trip to these areas netted us 27 bass that were caught with Carolina rigs and T-rigged weightless Senkos. On the N/S center ditch we had our most success. One other area we check out quickly was west of that center ditch and south of the end of it. We saw a couple hit the surface and Scott got one on the Chug Bug, and I got one with a weightless Senko that missed his bug. This is a big area and with limited time we didn't get to check much but will on our next trip out.
We launched at 7:15 and were off the water by 11:30. If you are looking to take a trip call us. If you are coming to fish try the areas mentioned and you should be able to find what we found. If you have a question call us, and if we can help we will be glad to.

Oh, the drudgery of it all. I hate to complain but I took a weeks vacation to go fishing and can you believe it? It was hot, lots of t-storms, and a bit breezy every afternoon, and all we had to show for it was some bass. Can't wait to get back to work so that I can rest up.
We even put in a couple days plying the bounding main for arm pullers and found some boneheads that were willing to play. We even got jumped by two tarpon, (we think), but all we got to see was line peeling from smoking reels.
First stop was Ansin/Garcia and the day would be brief. It's a good thing, because we looked like drenched rats until the rain came and hosed us off. Lots of little fish and even some early morning top water, but nothing significant. Lots of weed in this lake and getting tougher to find places to work much more than flukes.
Next stop was the C-23 canal in Martin County with some success on Carolina rigs. The SFWMD has been busy removing all the trees that lined the banks (nasty old Pepper trees) so if you haven't been there in a while you will not quite know where you are. Most fish were caught above the railroad bridge.
Next stop for me was the easy chair and babysitting my gorgeous grand daughter as Scott and Tamara headed out on salty brine to see if they could break some Tarpon loose. They came back late in the afternoon with that typical Florida Raccoon look upon their faces, toes that shone like Rudolph's nose, but sans any report of an outstanding catch.
I did have to sneak one day of work in as a regular customer called and asked if I would show him Walk-In-Water. Well, I did get to show him the lake and even a fish or two and then Mother Nature reared her ugly head and has us screaming for the ramp amidst rain and that nasty lighty stuff flickering across the sky. I just don't like holding quivering fishing gear.
The next day Scott and I heading out to sea with a quick stop outside to get some live bait. There was plenty to be had and within a half hour we were headed out to sea. Set down at 6.14 miles due east of the inlet and with a southerly breeze we started drifting our baits. Scott got slammed within seconds but missed and I didn't even have the boat completely set on the drift yet. He put another greenie out and it got stolen right after it hit the water. Hah! I sat on the bait lid so he couldn't get out again before I did. With two baits out and decent drift northward and out to see we watched rods waiting for the bait runners to sing there "I got a fishy on song". It didn't take long and after about a 5-minute fight Scott brought in and released a nice 12-pound bonie. Our next two, (a double) came within another 50 feet of drifting. Two more nice players of the sea, and our confidence in this area increased immensely. Just goes to show, confidence isn't everything as the group we were on raced one way as we went the other, (or so we thing). 11:00 AM and with no more fish and heat rising as if someone was stoking the furnace we called it quits and headed home.
Tomorrow it’s back to work fishing the Marsh. I can't stand it!
Say hi if you see us out here.
