Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Submitted by George, Imagination Bassin Guide Services

Date Fished: 12/1/02

Water Temperature: 64

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Todays work consisted of picking up shiners from Stick Marsh Bait and Tackle and hitting various areas to see how hot and heavy the bite is in those locations which we will be fishing for the next couple of months.

We started out on the Stick Marsh side and found fish in several locations. The NW area of the Marsh produced pretty good with the big fish going about 6 pounds. Out in front of the Palms didn't work today, however we have hit that area a couple of times in the last week or so and have found fish there. Due to company we were unable to check out a couple of other spots in that corner, but I am pretty sure that the bass are moving into that area at a pretty good clip.

In the SE area of the Marsh on a spot that we fished last year we instantly hit fish to 6 pounds. In pretty quick order we had gone through 5 dozen shiners so I suggested we take the last 5 dozen and hit the spillway area for some leisurely fishing.

As it should be, we ran through the last shiners very quickly. From 8 AM through 1:30 PM we had gone through 10 dozen shiners and boated 84 bass.

Obviously the shiner bite is strong and not restricted to just one area. If you get close to a school the bite will be rapid. If you are in open water free lining the shiners is not only more fun but also more productive. If you fishing next to any kind of floating weed, hooking the shiner just ahead of the anal fin will cause them to swim under the cover and the bass that come out can be quite big. If you fish next to this type of cover it is important to lay the shiner right at the edge of the cover so that it swims under rather than away.

If you are in areas where there is wood then a balloon or float becomes needed. When the fish hit you need to move them quickly so that they don't get you into the sticks.

After fishing the shiners we finished out the day throwing rattletraps in the SW area of the Farm. We pretty quickly boated another 7 bass in this area. All of the fish were caught along the northern edge of the wood, and not deep into the SW corner. The further you get into the SW corner the smaller the fish get, so hang around the outside edges if you want better quality fish.

Two items of note! Water levels are down a bit - take it easy on the Stick Marsh side. You wouldn't want to ruin a trip by having a hard meeting with a stump. The second item is about oil for you engine. Make sure you have enough before going out. It's a long haul from the back end of the Farm if you have to do it by trolling motor.

See you on the water. Say hi if you get the chance.
