Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Stick Marsh/Farm 13

Date Fished: 12/5/02

Water Temperature: 64

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Sam Bass, (how's that for a fisherman's name?), and his son arrived ready to face whatever mother nature planned to push their way, just to get a shot at catching a Stick Marsh lunker.

The wind was scheduled to howl again today, but the temperatures would be warm and conditions looked okay for artificial. For the first two hours there was just about no wind, but fog laid over most of the lake.

Rattletraps were the bait of choice as we were in a fair amount of wood interspersed with hydrilla and this bait had performed well for us over the last couple of weeks. As the fog lifted the bite picked up a bit and I heard a grunt from the back of the boat as Sam set the hooks into one of our big Stick/Farm ladies. It didn't take her long to find wood, but Sam wrestled on and won as she started making her way to the boat. As Sam worked her around the big motor we got a real good look at this gal and she was big. With no warning Sam's line parted and away she went. Apparently the wood had done its damage to the line and with the right twist this grand lady of the deep was running as fast as she could for an area of less harrassment. I'm not going to guess at her weight but I will say that she was one that would fulfill anyones dreams that come here.

As the morning wore on the wind got stronger and stronger and I would guess that it topped out at 25 MPH. It held that way for most of the day with periods of respite as the wind cycled through southerly directions. However, with all the stumps and grass the chop was kept down quite a bit and we only had to deal with the casts and not the pitching of the boat.

By days end we had boated 30 bass, but none to equal or even come close to Sam's grand lady. Sam's planning on coming back in the spring to do it all over again and who knows, perhaps he just might hook the same fish.

See you on the water. Weatherman is calling for okay weather but the wind will be up so plan accordingly. Jackets and rain gear will both be great to have if needed so don't leave them at home. Also, consider the sun and be sure to bring sun protection.
