Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Submitted by George, Imagination Bassin Guide Services

Date Fished: 12/15/02

Water Temperature: 61

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Old man winter has descended upon us and hopefully this morning was the worst of it. I didn't have a thermometer to test the 7 AM air, but the weatherman was calling it 42; it definitely felt in the 30's. My left hand certainly knew it was cold.

The option today was artificial baits and a few lessons and experiments on the Marsh and Farm. Starting out with rattletraps, spinner baits, and weightless Senkos we worked the NW end of the Marsh. No earthshaking news here, with only a couple of bass coming on weightless Senkos. Two more areas on the Marsh tried and we headed out for the Farm.

The thought was to check the edges of the 1st N/S irrigation ditch after rounding the divider levee. We threw weightless Senkos, C-rigged Senkos, spinner baits, and rattletraps as we went along. The first fish off the ditch came on chartreuse/white 3/8 oz. spinner bait and she weighed in at 4.5 pounds. This was at about mid-point of the ditch between the north end and the intersection of the E/W trail.

The next fish came at the intersection and she came on a rattletrap that was a 1/2 oz. Bill Lewis fire tiger. We dropped a marker and worked all around the area but only managed one other. Picking up the marker we continued our journey southward.

We didn't get more than about 100 feet and we were in the bass. They wanted the fire tiger rattletrap and they wanted to eat it. Only one came to the boat that didn't have the trap fully in its mouth and they were slamming it with a vengeance. Working from a marker we dropped on the first fish we traveled about 200 feet south and then turned around and worked back to the marker. There we sat for the balance of the day catching 3-4 bass on each pass north or south. All the fish came from the west side of the ditch with nary a bite on the east side. I was going to try some weightless Senko fishing but the bite was just too good to put down the trap.

On our 2nd or 3rd pass north the big one waked behind the trap but she only managed to push the bait forward. A quick cast back to her brought the 2nd hit and the rod bent in half as the bait stopped the retrieval dead. A quick run left and then back to the right followed by a tremendous leap in the air was all it took for this mighty gal to flip the trap back at us as she raced off to soothe her damaged pride. She was big, one of the biggest I've seen in a while, but we never got to weigh her. Next time perhaps.

On one of the passes I got hit before the reel was closed and with loose thumb on the reel she made a mess. I couldn't even reel it through so while I got the back lash out she ran and leaped wherever she wished. However, as luck would have it, her lips were pinned as she had inhaled the bait and once the back lash was gone this 6 pound beauty came to the boat.

By days end we had counted 31 bass to the boat, another 7 misses, 3 quick releases and 1 giant that would be waiting for the next time. It was a fantastic day on a fantastic lake.

See you out there. We'll be out there again tomorrow so if you see us say hi as you go by. Have a fantastic Holiday Season if we don't get to see you before they ar
