Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

The March winds have been around with gusto and the last three days had winds from the east and south anywhere from 15-30 mph. Tuesday the wind didn't really start blowing hard until 1:30 and we caught many bass in the SW area on rattletraps before being chased away by the wind. Wednesday the wind came very early and my customer opted to come out another day.
Yesterday the winds started blowing right on cue at the 8 AM breakfast bell and blew 20-25 gusting to 30 out of the south. As we started cleaning up for the trip back to the ramp at 3:00 if was finally calming down a bit. Persistence, patience, and boat placement paid off in spite of the wind as we managed to boat 45 bass up to 4.5 lbs. The pump house was running and it clanged the dinner bell for our bass and we took advantage. Early AM we found several bass that slammed our rattletraps in the SW area of the Farm. As the bite slowed down we moved out to the boat trails but the wind made it impossible to hold the boat. Boat placement when working the trails is critical and so we went off to the check the pump house. With the winds blowing just about dead out of the south our normal boat placement was not possible but with some innovation we finally found the right ticket and then worked it for all it was worth. Carolina-rigs worked extremely slowly were the ticket here and Daryl Barrett from NJ is now a 100% converted and convinced Carolina rig fisherman.
Conditions in general are excellent as long as you can work around the wind when it blows and the coming weeks should end this blustery period. Rattletraps and Carolina rigs are baits of choice wherever you are fishing. With the rattletraps remember that you should vary retrieve speeds and techniques. Stop and go, yo-yoing, and snappy jerks all add to the flexibility of this great bait. With the Carolina rig, have patience and work it slow!!! Don't get stuck in one area if your not getting fish, but don't hop all over the place either. Work each area you try thoroughly before moving on. If you do find fish live by the saying: don't leave fish to find fish! Top water will start soon and even now there is an occasional bite so keep one rigged and be sure to try it throughout the day. Buzz baits have been working very well in the late afternoon on the boat trails adjacent grasses as evidenced by some of the fantastic catches that Jim Porter has been getting out there.
Looking for a great time? Come fish the Marsh and experience a magical place.
