Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Capt. George Welcome
April 20, 2000
Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Date reported: 4/20/2000

Water Temperature: 75

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

As the weather is warming the fishing is fast approaching hot and heavy top-water action. Buzz baits, chug bugs, and most other top-water baits worked slowly will produce over the Hydrilla. Areas to concentrate these methods are all along the southern shore of the Farm and along the west wall from the fisherman's shack south. Boat trails continue to produce excellent results but instead of north of the east-west trail, look to the areas south. Carolina rigs, Texas rigs and rattletraps will work for most of the day, with top-water action being great early and late in the day.

Yesterday's trip had weather makings for a fantastic day. However, I started out the morning by locking my keys in the Suburban. Luckily the passenger window was down just enough to enable me to rectify my stupidity. About 10:00 AM while heading for the pump to check it out, the warning bell starting going off on the engine. Shutting down, I turned and saw smoke billowing from the cowl. With fire extinguisher handy, I was able to put out an electrical fire quickly so that damage was held to wires and electrical components only. I mention all this to point out the need to have a properly equipped boat, (all USCG required equipment), and know how, and be prepared to use them. If I had not been prepared my Nitro would now be sitting as nothing more than a burned out hull. It was a long trip back to the ramp, but 2.5 hours later I was on my way. (Never knew the Marsh/Farm was so big.)

I will be out of action until sometime next week. However I can help you get a trip on the Marsh if you're looking to go. I have already made arrangements for the people I had over the weekend and wish to thank them for their understanding and cooperation: and to Mr. Hugh Crumpler a big thanks for quickly coming to my aid. I rest easy knowing that they will have a fishing trip to remember under his keep, as he is an outstanding fisherman, guide and person.

Ansin/Garci

Date reported: 4/20/2000

Water Temperature: 74

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Conditions this year on Garcia is quite different than last year and call for looking for the fish in different locations. Last year at this time the fish were heavily located in the nursery areas in the NE impoundments. This year, however, the bass in these areas are quite small. Fish the canals adjacent to the grass lines that separate the rear impoundments. Texas or Carolina rigs are the baits of choice. In the open impoundment areas shallow diving crank baits and spinner baits have been producing well. Hydrilla has really taken off with the warming weather and the pit area is fast being overtaken. However, the southeast wall has good fish and plenty of them. Drag a Carolina rig from the pit back to the top of the levee and you will catch fish. Water levels are dropping as irrigation needs of the surrounding entities call for pumping the water out. The pump action of course creates current and look for some good action anywhere there are intersecting canals. Also check for currents through the grass when the wind is up.
