Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Capt. George Welcome

Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temps: 78

Air Temps: Low 80's

Clarity: 2-3 Feet

Although the boat is still in the shop it didn't stop me from hitting the Marsh. Went on Mike Allen's boat and what a day we had. When we left the ramp at first light there was a stiff breeze blowing out of the SW but it settled as soon as the sun rose.

Along with the sunrise came the bite and the days fishing that ensued was without exaggeration superb. Under mostly sunny skies and light winds Mike and I managed to boat 60 to 70 of the Marsh's finest bass and the methods used had quite a twist.

We started early in the SW area of the Farm with top water but didn't do great so we quickly switched to spinner. Kind of a gold fleck watermelon skirt with gold Colorado blades put a quick 20-30 bass in the boat with fish to 8 pounds.

As people observed our activity they started moving in and after about the 8th boat we decided it was time to move off and find another spot.

One of the areas that has been hot lately is the south shore as long as there is coontail present (hint) and the bite has been on top water. However this is where the twist comes in. Chug bugs are the bait, but don't chug the bug. Cast and do not move the bait. It will not take long before a bass will engulf the bait and the rest is reeling him to the boat. What you don't want to do is turn around, adjust your hat, or anything else that will take your attention away from that idle bait as that will be the time the hit comes. The other "hint" is don't be too quick on the trigger. Wait on top water until you can feel the weight of the hit and then set the bait. Too quick an attempt at hook set will leave missed fish after missed fish.

For those that don't know, Mike Allen is Dr. Mike Allen, a state fisheries biologist and a bass fishing nut. After leaving me at the ramp at 3:00 Mike headed back out to fish. (Probably till dark) He was amazed at the amount and size of bass taken using the "don't move the bait" technique. So as to assure him that this was not just something that was happening to us I had him move over to my good friends boat, Mr. Hugh Crumpler. Hugh and his clients from Tennessee caught and released throughout the day 71 bass. Between Hugh and clients, Mike and myself something between 130 and 140 bass were caught by doing nothing more than casting a chug bug out and letting it sit.

Who said fishing is hard work? We will have at them again tomorrow to see if we can't do just a tad better. Will let you all know just how good, good can be.

Looking for a great spot to fish> Stick Marsh/Farm 13 is the place to be. Want to go with someone that knows the Stick Marsh, certainly as well as anyone give me a call. Want references: No Problem!

Disclaimer: Had to put this in - hehehe - sometimes I can be fooled but not very often. The weather cannot be controlled but I will do a "be nice weather dance" but results are not guaranteed. All joking aside: we are coming into our best season on the Marsh. Want a great day: COME ON OUT!!!
