Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temperature: 89
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet
Just how low can this area get and still leave room to get the boat in is anybody's guess, but it won't be much lower. As it is, if you do launch you can just about expect some form of damage due to the hardwood stumps and branches that lie just below the surface. Several boats have been disabled with holes right through the hull lately and it is only going to get worse unless we get some rain. Also, motor damage is on the increase due to the low water levels. Back on the farm the levees adjacent to the boat trails have mere inches of water on them so be careful when crossing these. Unless something falls from the sky pretty soon I know I will be one who will be looking elsewhere for my bass. I have already had to patch several surface bangs on the bottom.
With all that, the fishing is just dynamite in there. Thursday's trip netted 103 bass all on chug bugs and all on the boat trails. Today’s trip we broke 100 at 12:10 and again all on chug bugs. I did grab a couple on rattletraps but went back to the bug quickly. With shad schooled up and moving about you only have to watch for the inevitable boil and then it's a quick 5 - 10 fish. Also, when you don't have a boil to work the bass are hanging in the hydrilla adjacent to the trail. You've got the bait, now here's the location. The center boat trail from the intersection south is where the action is. You've got the bait and the location, now here's the technique. Work the bug slowly -plop, plop and let it sit: twitch, twitch and let it sit: repeat all the way back to the boat. Also, do not be afraid of letting it sit too long. Probably 50% of today's bass came when the bug was absolutely motionless. I joked with a friend out there that asked me my secret today by telling him I have a sign on the bottom of the boat that says "bite me!” but the reality is that you have to work the bug the way the bass want it, not visa versa.
Again, not wanting to beat this to death, but be very careful out there, go slow if there is any doubt about water depth or obstructions, and take plenty of water and sunscreen.
