Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

The month of June finished as strongly as it began. There is one major addition to the Marsh/Farm at this time and it is called water. Levels have increased making transition from the ramp to the east rim canal just a little bit easier.
This weeks trips had a net result of 352 fish with weights to 9.3 pounds. It started Sunday with three avid anglers, Tony Moresca Sr. and Jr. and Tony Sr's brother Tom. We started with the chug bug and a good bite until the weather worsened early in the day and called it a short day for safeties sake. Tony Jr. is 10 and you have to see this youngster go at the bass. I have many older fishermen that couldn't keep up with with this bass fisherman.
Monday was a bonus day for me as my oldest son, George Jr. and family were here for the week and I got to take him our for a super day on the water. As luck would have it we had a tremendous bonus in that the pump house was running. Early AM we picked up 40 bass on topwater working the irrigation canals and adjacent levees and then we moved to the pump house where we picked up another 90 on Carolina rigs, rattle traps, and occasional chug bugs. I have the grandkids for the next month but they are just a little young to be out there yet.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday was a real treat for me with Anglers Greg and Bette Anne Powell from Boca Raton, Florida and their friend Mike Sullivan of Ft. Lauderdale. Tuesday was a late afternoon trip and we went directly to the pump house. It was still running but not with the current of Monday and we picked up a few. Weather moved in shortly after starting and we had to call it quits. Wednesday AM the weather was fantastic and we spent it chug bugging the trails. The bass were balling the shad and staying with them was relatively easy. Wednesday afternoon was a repeat of the morning and we fished until 6 PM. Thursday morning found the fish in the same location and still very active on the chug bug. Greg, Bette Anne, and Mike all proved to be very proficient anglers and we caught over 140 bass for their trip to the Marsh.
Friday I headed out to the same area and found the bass in the same location still working shad. Our trip was terminated early in the day this time due to 25+ mile an hour winds.
Fishing locations remain to be centered on adjacent levees on the edges of the irrigation canals. Also venture our from the canals up to 100-150 feet eastward of the N/S trails. The primary canal is the center N/S canal, and particularly south of the intersection. Pay attention to the possibility of pumps running as current really turns these bass on.
Baits have remained strongly with top water and we stuck with the chug bug. Buzz baits are good choices and as Jim Porter reported, working worm or jerk bait at or just below the surface works like magic also.
Look for bass hitting the shad. These schools can mean bass in the boat quickly and in big numbers. If the hits on shad drop off slow down the top water baits. On Wednesday afternoon we hauled many a bass in that sucked down a non-moving chug bug. If the bite seems to drop off put that bug out there and let it sit. Move it with slight twitches only.
Although the water is coming up extreme caution is still needed. Also, don't become a statistic with weather. If you can see lightening or hear thunder it is time to head for the ramp. Good fishing and hope to see you out there.
