Hunt for Monster Bonefish around Oahu

Capt. Chris Asaro
October 28, 2009
Honolulu - Saltwater Fishing Report

The conditions were almost too perfect this week!

Yes, it is possible for it to be too nice as Mike Johnson found out. We had a slow morning but as the tide rose there was no shortage of fish. The problem was the fish were on the large side in the 8-10 lb range and didn't get there by being dumb. He made a couple of perfect presentations at bones charging us but they just had as made in the ultra light winds. Mike is a pure sightfisherman and didn't want to resort to blind casting holes so we kept the faith. He said it was great to see so many fish and would settle the score next time.

Today, i had a similiar day with Coach Duff. After going about 15 days straight outings, Capt. Duffield took most of the week off. He called me last night and asked if i wanted to help him with a photo shoot for one of the local newspapers.

We only had 1-2 hours as the writer was on tight schedule so Coach went for the middle of the day, when the light and tide was perfect. Coach only targets very large fish with his clients so we went straight to the 'land of giants' flat.

At first the tide was a little off and we didn't see much. As we moved to deeper water the fish began to dump! in about 1 hour, we saw over 50 fish with a handful of perfect shots. Coach ties some of the most realistic crab flies i have ever seen, right up there with Tim Borski! He had a couple track the fly in the super tough conditions, one fish in the 40 in range even did a 180 right next to the boat but it was just too close to seal the deal. I'm sure he will be seeing that fish in his dreams tonight! ha,ha!

It sure was exciting for the just hour and a half we were actually fishing. The schedule packs up next week so i will have more to report shortly!

Honolulu Fishing Forecast:

As i look at the window and peer at the lush mountains, i don't see a breath of wind or cloud in the sky. hopefully some trade winds will come back soon. This is one of the best times of the year to come to Oahu with tourism very low and fish crawling all over the flats!

Target Species:

Bonefish, Trevally
